Phase 3
In Phase 3 children continue to use all the sounds they were taught in Phase 2. In addition, they are taught additional sounds (phonemes) and the letters / groups of letters that represent them (graphemes). The information and resources in this section are designed to support you in helping your child at home - please feel free to speak with your child's class teacher if you require any additional information or support.
This is what your child will learn in Phase 3:
Set 6: j, v, w, x
Set 7: y, z, zz, qu
Consonant digraphs: ch, sh, th, ng
Vowel digraphs: ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er

In Phase 3, your child will be taught some high frequency words. Click here to download a copy and read them at home together. Some of the words are decodable (sound out) and some are called 'tricky words'.
