Outdoor learning

At Field Lane we aim to:

  • Promote outdoor learning as a medium that all subjects can be taught through
  • Provide a safe and secure environment where children can take risks
  • Encourage children to care for their environment as they spend more time in it
  • Enable children to learn by working on a larger, more active scale than is possible indoors
  • Use playtimes and lunchtimes as learning times
  • Encourage close links with parents and the school in celebrating our outdoor space and the rich learning that can take place within it

Year Five's Outdoor Adventures!

From the 8th - 10th May, Year Five had the opportunity to learn outdoors every day. As part of their Stone Age topic, they were split into 'tribes' and took part in lots of outdoor challenges. Each day they had to build a shelter to house their tribe and they mastered their building skills day by day. They used the 'clove hitch' knot to make their structures stronger and by the last day, they were experts!

Activities included:

  • Creating their own tribe chants
  • Designing flags using regular and irregular 2d shapes within a pattern
  • Building 3d structures to sit outside their dens

We had many surprises during our outdoor adventures - one tribe even found a bird's nest and became nature detectives!

Well done Year Five for your perseverence - you worked as a team and demonstrated true kindness towards each other.
