Intent

Our curriculum is designed to add to pupils’ cultural capital and develop awareness of subject specific vocabulary to inspire children to want to know more about the past and to think and act as historians. We create links across the children’s skills and knowledge in History which helps develop children’s awareness of chronology and see the links between concepts. We work on creating an environment where knowledge is engaged, creating links between the knowledge and skills needed in History, so that these work hand in hand to create confident Historians with knowledge of content and skills to analyse the world around them, both historical and modern. We enable the children to think, reflect, debate, discuss and evaluate the past by formulating and refining questions and lines of enquiry.

To meet the National Curriculum objectives for History we have planned a curriculum which teaches History through an overeaching concept. Below you can find a History Overview showing the History which is taught in each year group. As well as this you can also find a History Skills Progression showing the progression of History through the school.

Implementation

At Field Lane, History is taught through teacher led activities in Smart Time, whole class lessons and through experiences and trips. During SMART Time students will be involved in practical teacher led lessons which build on pupils understanding. As well as this in Smart Time students also have the opportunity to practice the skills that they have already learned and apply these to independent activities. Alternatively History is also taught through whole class sessions where skills, concepts and knowledge is taught discreetly and students have the opportunity to revisit and apply these concepts in SMART time. Teachers complete an assessment grid to show the children’s understanding of each topic.

Impact

Our History Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through a variety of methods. Firstly low stake quizzes at the end of every topic assess children’s knowledge of historical skills and knowledge. Each child also completes a project at the end of a History unit which will contain pieces of work the child has carried out on the topic; each child chooses how they wish to present the pieces of work. The work that will be included in the project will be given to the child as a checklist with a list of non negotiables. We feel as a school this allows children to pursue their own lines of enquiry within a topic and gives them ownership of their own learning.
